Offering outward signs of emotional support or secure comfort is optionally appreciated. Underlying manipulations of getting only what one wants by either end of the channel is judged differently. A selfish interest in trying to be kind can be alternately smart, unfriendly, or perhaps gentlemanly in today's day and age, but not wise or pure.
